What is your definition?
A definition based on status and material things.
Every stage in life wants to give you a definition. From childhood to adulthood, as a child , one is defined by the type of school he /she goes , the social status of his/her parents or the material possession , It’s not very far from what defines an adult. Most adults are defined by the status or position they have acquired such as a husband, a wife , a business owner or founder , a CEO , a mother , a father , or defined by their material possessions such as cars, land, etc.
It’s like we don’t have a choice but to fall into one of these categories to find our worth in the society we live in today. What is your worth? Education? Friends? Your parents’ status? Your last name? your job? What happens to those who failed to belong in any of these categories? There are young people in Tanzania who can’t find another way to live a fulfilled life without formal employment. Yes, with the degree certificates ,yet fail to belong ,they lose hope ,they complain ,you know why? It’s because they’re looking for a definition based on the society we live in.
I’m not supporting unemployment, but I think there’s always something to do for you to earn. One the best speakers we invited to our girl’s event, Mr. Elibariki Shammy said in Tanzania there is no problem of unemployment, there is a problem of picking jobs. Meaning that everyone is looking for a white collar job while there are millions of unexploited areas which we can use to earn money.
Because our society sees formal employment as a way to live a good life.
Our generation of young people go to school expecting a good life just by getting a formal job. This is not the only way, we should not allow this mindset because it blinds us from who we truly are. There are many university graduates frustrated with lack of jobs, your identity should not be based on status or things.
A friend of mine went to the village to visit her grandparents in Bukoba, then she was surprised to meet a man of 27 years of age who has a family ,a wife and two kids. He only finished primary school, but this guy had a land to tilt, owned a house , and runned his life without stress contrary to the reality of many educated young people living in town.
What’s my point? find out what you’re relying on to define you. There’s a big limitation or potential in where you find your definition. The wealthiest people in the world are still searching for their definition. A definition of something is always an origin, a function, a character of something. We find our definition in our purpose. And we find our purpose from our creator. Sit down and stop worrying to fit into the society, introduce who you are to the society. The culture has not seen your type yet.
