How the body of a woman is preferred over her intellect

Can the mind and the body of a woman be wanted at once?

Her body is most wanted. Her body has many names trending all over our ears. People can notice her boobs but have no idea about her books. Yes, women love compliments but do not neglect their intellect. Some men can even marry a woman who cannot read, as long as she is beautiful outside and follows orders.

From my grandmother’s definition; to be a woman is to be silent, especially when your husband is speaking, do not question him. To be a woman is to endure pain and abuse even if you lose your front tooth. To be a woman is to be a champion in bed and a spectator at the table. If you’re in Africa, I believe you have many examples in mind.

Most men want the body, this is why the opinion of a woman is less regarded. In some cultures, like the Masai to educate her is a waste of money because she’ll be married. Some women are blamed for being opinionated. Society tells her ” you’ll not get married with your mouth”. It’s also obvious that some men truly want the whole of her, but find themselves intoxicated by traditional illusions “do not let a woman control you”. It is almost an offense to men. I believe it’s not about who controls who. It is about how we play our roles with respect and dignity. Maybe we should define our roles from the very beginning.

This is also evidenced in relationships where a woman doesn’t have any idea of his partner’s businesses or earnings. She’s not involved in any decisions affecting the family. She might get all the provisions but doesn’t have any decisions.
If a woman is not involved in her own household decisions, what makes us think she will be involved in the national decisions? If she doesn’t have a voice in her own family, how can she have a voice in her nation?

According to UN Women, Women serve as Heads of State or Government in only 22 countries, and 119 countries have never had a woman leader. Just 25 percent of national parliamentary seats are held by women worldwide. This is contributed by many factors, including how we perceive women. Some women have been denied education, freedom of choice, the right to speak and to be heard, right to own properties even when these are constitutional and human privileges.

When I say” voice”, I don’t mean how loud women can be, I mean if their wisdom and ideas are considered or accepted and included in the family or national development. If her ideas are trusted and her ability is not questioned because of gender bias. Lisa Bevere the best-selling author and speaker said ‘God would have never granted women a voice if He intended for them to remain silent.

It’s about time we see women as rational beings and not just bodies. When we change how we perceive a woman, we will give room for ideas and creativity that have been locked down for years. It begins with you. It starts from the family level.

  1. If only we were taught more about the big roles women have played in history, the Amelia Earhearts, The Harriet Tubmans, or have a read about the Dahomey Amazons…an all-women fearless army from the ancient Dahomey kingdom of Benin. We have to start teaching our little girls that they are more than princesses in tiaras.

  2. This is well said Najma, women have high potential to change the world, and women must be at the fore front to let the community know that their values is in their brain not in their bodies!
